Allowing app installations from unknown sources

By default, Android allows app installations from Google Play Store only.

To install App Cloner and generated clones, you must enable app installations from unknown sources. For your security, make sure to download App Cloner from the official App Cloner home page:

Remember that Google Play Protect always scans all apps, no matter if they are installed from the Google Play Store or from other sources, local or otherwise.

Android 8.0 & newer

If you are on Android 8.0 or higher, you will be prompted to grant the Install unknown apps permission for the app that triggers the installation (the source), e.g. your browser app when downloading App Cloner from the web site or your file manager app, if you tap on a previously downloaded APK file in the Downloads folder.

Similarly, when you install generated clones from App Cloner, you will need to grant App Cloner the Install unknown apps permission. You only need to grant this permission once per source.

Android 7.0 & older

If you are using Android 7.0 or older, you must enable a global setting to allow app installations from unknown sources.

To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Go to Android Settings > Security
  2. Check the option Unknown sources
  3. Tap OK on the prompt message

Troubleshooting APK installations

If the Install button is disabled or doesn’t respond to taps, please check if you have active overlay apps like blue light filters, chat heads or floating widgets and temporarily disable these as they may interfere with the app installation (the Android system may block the Install button for security reasons as long as other apps show floating elements).

If you get an error message App not installed, please check if you have sufficient free internal storage space on your device. The free space required during installation may be significantly larger than the size of the APK file (it could be twice as much or even more). Please remember that RAM memory is not the same as device storage.

Depending on the default install location chosen by the operating system, external storage space, e.g. provided by mounted SD-cards, may not be used for the installation process.
